Gary with my other sisters son, Davis

11/12/03 My Nephew which is my sisters only child was killed in a senseless drive-by shooting early Tues. AM. Nov. 11th 2003. He ran across a parking lot screaming, "get-down, get down" and tried to push down 3 girls in harms way. As he was pushing them a bullet struck him in the neck killing him nearly instantly. His name was Gary and was named after my Dad. I hadn't seen him in two years until three weeks ago when I had the opportunity to spend an entire day with him. I, my sisters and my parents helped raise Gary. He will be missed and is a true hero

11/19/03 The shooter was caught and is currently out of jail on bond. He was charged with 1st degree murder and other charges are pending. 3 of his other shots hit the ambulance that was treating a girl he had maced 20 minutes prior. He would not say why he maced the girl or why he started shooting. He would not talk at all so we don't really know for sure why he committed this horrible act.

11/19/03 e-mail from my Sister:
"After the news of the killer making bond. I became quite weak and felt very
sick. I have been in bed since....until just moments ago Doug made me get up
to take a phone call.

Still crying I took the phone.....it was none other than David Robinson,
Spurs basketball player. He told me he was out on Saturday and a young man
came up to him and told him how incredible Gary was and all the friends he
had touched in his life and that David was mentioned in the eulogy my
brother gave and said he wanted to call to lift me up and tell me that he
was praying for me and my family.

I tried not to cry when we spoke but I did tell him that Gary thought the
world of him and what a incredible role model he is for kids, told him that
Gary was chosen to be a walk-on for the UTSA basketball team last year but
had poor knees and hurt them even more in practice and was going to be out
for a bit and they let him go. I told him Gary had became a Christian at
the age of 7 and attended Spurs basketball camp for many many summers. I
told him Gary is trying to start a BB team in heaven like he was in the
process here with a friend. We were on the phone for about 10 minutes, Doug
said I was talking a little too much and that I should say thank you and let
the poor man hang up....

But I must say that it was a call that God was all over. I had been in bed
for sometime feeling very sick and shivering and crying when David called
and all I could think of was Lil Gary jumping up and down in heaven.

How'd ya like that one Lil Gary????

Thank you God, H"

11/30/04 The guy that killed my Nephew was sentenced to 40 years in prison today. My sister had a rough year but we hope the recovery can begin now. She knows Gary would want here to get on with her life but as I am most others cannot come close to grasping, it's hard. Thanks for all the support to her and my family during the last year.

06/08/2006 A couple of months ago the guy that killed Gary was finally sent to prison. He stayed in county jail all this time.
